As a wedding photographer, I’ve found that photographing couples in environments they already love leads to more natural connection, genuine emotion, and images that feel timeless and personal.
Why Personal Locations Create Better Engagement Photos
In the engagement session questionnaire I send to every couple, one of my favorite questions is always: What are your go-to date night spots and favorite things to do together?
That answer tells me so much about who you are as a couple.
The reason this matters is simple — comfort creates connection. When you’re in a place that feels familiar, you’re able to relax, move naturally, and interact the way you normally would. That ease shows up in photos in a way no posed setting ever could.
Letting Go of “Traditional” Engagement Photo Expectations
A lot of couples assume engagement photos have to look a certain way or take place in a specific type of location. I always encourage my couples to release that pressure. There are no rules when it comes to engagement photos — you’re allowed to take them anywhere that feels meaningful to you, even if it feels non-traditional.

Some of the most memorable engagement sessions I’ve photographed have taken place in everyday, meaningful spots, like:
- Arcade bars or breweries
- Sonic stops or late-night drive-thru dates
- Restaurant patios during happy hour
- Your favorite running or walking trail
- The drive-in movie theater
These locations may not feel “traditional,” but they’re deeply personal — and that’s exactly what makes the photos feel special.
