There are few places in Tulsa that feel quite like the Philbrook Museum of Art in the summer. Between the architecture, winding garden paths, layers of greenery and flowers throughout the grounds, there is so much variety without ever having to leave one location.
Maddi and Jackson chose Philbrook for their summer engagement session, and it was the perfect backdrop for an evening that felt relaxed, romantic, and completely unhurried.
We started closer to the historic villa, where the clean architecture and manicured gardens gave us a more classic setting for their first look. Maddi wore a long ivory dress while Jackson kept things simple in a white button-down and blue trousers. I loved how understated everything felt against the architecture — nothing competing for attention, just the two of them together.
Engagement Photos in the Philbrook Gardens
One of my favorite things about photographing an engagement session at Philbrook is how quickly the scenery changes as you move through the property.
The museum sits on 25 acres of gardens surrounding the historic Villa Philbrook, an Italian Renaissance-style home completed in 1927. The original garden design incorporated Italian, English and French influences, which is part of what gives the property such a distinct feeling compared with other engagement photo locations in Tulsa.
For Maddi and Jackson, that meant we could create something more structured and classic near the villa and then walk a few minutes into the gardens for photographs that felt softer and a little less posed.
They changed into a second look as we moved farther into the gardens — Jackson in a simple white shirt and neutral trousers and Maddi in a floral dress that could not have worked better with everything blooming around them.
This part of their session was much more about movement. Walking through the garden, stopping wherever the light looked good, and giving them space to interact without trying to make every photograph feel overly arranged.
Summer Engagement Photos at Philbrook Museum
Philbrook is especially beautiful for summer engagement photos because the gardens become such a big part of the photographs.
Rather than using greenery simply as a background, I wanted Maddi and Jackson to feel surrounded by it. We photographed along the stone pathways and between the flowers, letting some of the garden come into the foreground so the images felt layered and full of life.
And, naturally, there was a little running around and picking each other up somewhere in between.
Those photographs tend to be some of my favorites from engagement sessions because they feel less like something created specifically for the camera and more like a glimpse of the two of you together.
As the sun started getting lower, we made our way toward one of the most recognizable views at Philbrook — looking across the water toward the villa.
The scale of this part of the property is incredible. Instead of filling the frame with Maddi and Jackson, I pulled back for a few photographs that showed just how expansive the gardens are.
Those wider photographs are always important to me. The closer portraits tell you what a moment felt like, while the wider frames give you a sense of where you actually were.
An Evening at Philbrook with Maddi & Jackson
We stayed near the water as the light softened, mixing those wider environmental photographs with closer portraits of the two of them.
Toward the end of the evening, we moved into some of the darker areas of the grounds. It gave the final portion of their gallery a completely different feeling from where we started — deeper greens, softer light and photographs that felt a little quieter.
We finished with a mix of close portraits and black and white images, including a few beneath the columns overlooking the gardens.
Maddi and Jackson’s session is such a good example of why I love engagement sessions that leave room to wander. There doesn’t need to be a complicated plan or a long list of poses. Give us a beautiful place, good light and enough time to explore, and the photographs can unfold from there.
And on a summer evening in Tulsa, Philbrook is pretty hard to beat.
